Tuesday Training: Hill Sprints

Happy Training Tuesday, Pro Football Hall of Fame Marathon followers! We are 11 weeks away from race weekend and we couldn’t be more excited to give you some pointers on training.

How’s training been so far? If you would like to share your training journey with us, feel free to email me at tina@hofmarathon.com. We would love to hear the details of your racing strategy, hear your goals and share your story with the community.

Speaking of community, I have always found it easier to train when I have a supportive community around me.

If you are in a rut or are finding it hard to push yourself out the door, consider running with a group. Every Saturday we host a group training run welcoming all talents and abilities for those training for our events!  Next run will be held this Saturday, February 16th at 604 6th ST NW, Canton, OH. Running time starts at 7:30am.

Check out our Facebook page Pro Football Hall of Fame Marathon and click on events to join! We always enjoy a big running crowd.

Last week we discussed tempo and the importance it has in marathon training. This week I want to talk about strength work. Yes, we may be lean and mean athletes but we still need strength to get to the next level.

I am talking about an EASY and simple way to incorporate a strength/speed routine in your training plan. When you are building strength , you are essentially gaining speed.

A great way to find a cheap and convenient strength regime is incorporating hill sprints. Find a decent size hill in your neighborhood and start doing 4-5 hill sprints on it. Work your way up to 10 hill sprints. I recommend doing these every other week and I personally like doing these on a Monday. It is a great way to start out the week by conquering something!

Hill sprints are beneficial for the obvious reasons. It strengthens practical running muscles, reduces injuries and also improves your running form.

But there are also many other reasons for incorporating this easy to find workout. Not only does it strengthen your physical fitness, but it also builds mental toughness. Hill sprints are also a great way to kickstart your metabolism and it boosts your stamina.

If you know of a solid hill to utilize for these, get started this week! I also recommend utilizing the course hills to do these on. You got this, community!
